Chapter Twenty-Five

Jen Garner

Hannah and Jen were dropped off in the same place as the night before and made their way to Battle Bridge Place. It was all change in the daytime, and the streets that were once lined with women in tight skirts and high heels were now lined with tourists waiting for their connection or a friend, or perhaps just sitting and watching the world go by in the summer sunshine.

‘Do you think she'll show?’ Hannah asked.

‘I’m really not sure.’

‘So, just to clarify, you’re my friend and we’re looking for your friend Dana?’

‘Yep,’ Jen agreed. She was a little distracted as she noticed how different the Bird Cage looked during the day. Long gone were the neon lights, and all that was left was the rivalry between the younger generation to have a go on the swing. ‘There she is.’ Jen regained focus and signalled towards their lead as they made their way over. ‘Hi, thanks for meeting me again,’ Jen said as she approached her.

‘Not a problem, doll.’

‘My name’s Lizzy, and this is my friend, Monica.’ Jen introduced them and held out her hand.

‘Candy,’ the woman said.

‘Where's the best place to get a decent breakfast around here?’ Jen was keen to move the conversation away from the crowded square.

‘There’s a greasy spoon this way,’ Candy said as she began to walk off, clearly expecting Jen and Hannah to follow. Hannah gave Jen a look of concern as they were led past the train station and up a little side street.

‘You can always get a good meal here,’ Candy said, opening the door. ‘No matter who you are.’

Surveying the small café, Jen followed Candy in with Hannah following behind.

‘Morning, ladies,’ the owner said to them as they entered.

‘Morning, Ken. Full English over here when you've got a moment,’ Candy called back.

‘Friendly with the owner?’ Jen asked.

‘Yeah, he's one of the good guys.’ Candy took a seat and waited for Jen and Hannah to join her.

‘Can I get you two lovely ladies anything?’ Ken came over and looked at her.

‘Just a tea, please,’ Jen said quickly.

‘You sure, Lizzy? You already skipped breakfast earlier.’ Hannah feigned concern.

‘I'm too worried about Dana to eat,’ Jen responded, playing along. ‘You said something about seeing my friend?’ Jen continued, once she was sure Ken was out of earshot.

‘Can I look at the photo again?’

‘Certainly.’ Jen dug around in her bag. ‘It's in here somewhere.’

Candy laughed in amusement. ‘Spend a night on the streets, doll, you'll soon learn to carry less.’

Jen pulled out the photo and handed it over to Candy, who studied it for a while before responding.

‘Yeah. I think I remember seeing her at a couple of the parties recently . . .’

‘Someone's birthday?’ Jen asked with added enthusiasm.

‘Ha . . . no. How best to put it?’ Candy smirked. ‘Orgies.’

Jen took a huge breath in. ‘What was she doing at a sex party?’ Jen asked, looking towards Hannah for comfort.

Hannah moved her hand onto Jen's arm. ‘Wait till we find out more,’ Hannah responded perfectly.
